Both books entirely handwritten in ink, with magnificent calligraphy, geometrical drawings and proofs in both, a few drawings of ships. Headings include: The Julien Kalendar; Geometrical Problems; To Make and Angle; To Work Proportions for Logarithams; Plan Sailing; The Plain Chart; Traverse Sailing; Mercator Sailing; Parallel Sailing; Middle Traverse Sailing; Star Correcting a Reckoning; To Work and Orientation; To Devid (sic) a Log Line.
PLUS "A Journal of a Voiage by Gods Permition for the Good Ship Margaret from Boston to St. Kitts kept by David Witcom, Commander, Feb 17, 1795 - May 29, 1795." And subsequently the "Dolphin" bound for Jamaica.

He was the son of David and Kezia (Wheelwright) Whitcomb. Includes his son's silverplated coffin badge "David Whitcomb, Aged 68 Yrs, 1 Mo, June 24th, 1878".
